Frequently Asked Questions about our Courses

Who are your courses aimed at?

Most of our short courses are aimed at anybody who feels that they lack the necessary field skills to succeed in an ecological job or would just like to increase their knowledge about wildlife in general. People of all ages come on our courses with a variety of academic and practical knowledge, ranging from university students to people already working within the environmental/ecological fields, and people embarking on a career change. Sometimes we host specialist courses which are specifically aimed at consultants.

Why is the training beneficial?

Acorn Ecology recognises that whilst university courses provide knowledge, they often fail to equip you with the necessary field skills for an ecological/conservation job. Our solution is to provide affordable professional development courses that are led by practicing ecologists. The courses also provide an opportunity to meet other people working within similar or related industries.

What can we expect when we attend a course?

Each course provides training from an experienced practicing ecologist, and the opportunity to learn in a field-based, hands-on approach. We aim to make the day relaxed and enjoyable, as well as informative and challenging. Students will receive a course information pack covering many of the issues discussed on the course, as well as additional information. Basic refreshments are also provided.

Will I be given a certificate?

Each student will be given a certificate of attendance which will give a brief outline of the course content.

What experience does the tutor have?

Courses are usually taken by me Sue Searle BSc, PG Dip (Ecology), MIEEM. I have over 10 years experience of working within the environmental and conservation sectors and have been a practicing environmental consultant for the past 4 years. I have been running professional development courses for the past 2 years and received much positive feedback on their style and content, such as:

“I’m positive that the experience gained has helped me gain employment in the ecology sector”

“I cannot over-emphasize the value of the practical hands-on nature of the course compared with others I have been on - it transfers so much more information in a memorable way - puts markers on the information so that it is easily retrievable - compared with just being lectured at!”

Can we book you to provide in-house training? Are group discounts available?

We can provide training to corporations or groups of wnthusiastic individuals throughout the South West. We can also tailor training for certain aspects of ecological studies or surveying, and are constantly looking to add to the list of courses offered. You can call us to discuss the possibilities of group discounts too.

How many other people will be attending each course?

Group sizes tend to be around 12, although they can be slightly bigger or smaller, depending on demand. If numbers are below 6, we unfortunately have to cancel the course and will let you know at least a week in advance.

What will I need to bring on the course?

A ‘what to bring’ list will be sent out to you 2-3 weeks before the courses commence. Equipment for the surveys is provided, but you will need to bring appropriate outdoor clothing/footwear and a packed lunch.

Where are the courses held?

Our courses are based in the Exeter area and include visits to local wildlife sites. Most of our courses are held in St Lukes’ church rooms, School Lane, Countess Wear, EX2 6LG where there is ample street parking.

What are the transport arrangements for the courses?

Students are expected to make their own way to the initial course venue, although for people travelling by bus, train or air, we can arrange pickups and returns as long as you let us know in advance. During the course, we endeavour to keep travel to a minimum and ask students to share lifts to and from field visits.

Is accommodation available?

Accommodation is not provided as part of the course fee, however, you can view a list of local accommodation by clicking here.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

Unfortunately we cannot give a full refund due to the admin involved in the booking process. However the following refunds are available:

·    60% refund if you cancel a month in advance

·    30% refund if you cancel 2-4 weeks before

·    No refund if you cancel less than 2 weeks before the course
