At Acorn Ecology we are always looking for ways to help people launch and enhance their career in ecology. Whilst we do not have any vacancies at the current time, we hope the advice and information on this page will help you to take a step forward in your career.
Courses
A good way to enhance your CV and impress potential employers is to attend field courses that improve your skills and knowledge. Whilst many degree courses are excellent at providing background knowledge about ecology and wildlife, few provide skills and knowledge that are directly applicable to Ecological Consultancy. Therefore, to boost your chances of finding an ecological job, we strongly recommend that you attend some of our field courses. In particular the Acorn Ecology Certificate in Ecological Consultancy is designed specifically for this prupose.
Voluntary work
Another good way to improve your skills is to do voluntary work. For the past few summers, Acorn Ecology has been providing month long work experience placements for graduates and career changers. This not only increases their field and report writing skills, but also gives them an insight into what working in a consultancy is really like.
This summer (2010) those people who attend our Certificate in Ecological Consultancy course will be given first priority for our voluntary placements so that they have a chance to experience working in a consultancy as well as gleaning a suite of knowledge and skills from the taught aspects of the course.
People Profiles
If you are an Ecological Consultant and are looking to recruit new and reliable staff, click here. On this page you will be able to see short biographies about some new ecologists who have worked alongside and assisted Acorn Ecology in the last couple of years, and who are looking for permanent positions within ecological consultancies. As we can’t offer jobs to all of the people who have worked with us, we would like to help them gain employment by recommending them to other consultants.
Reading
Another way to boost your knowledge is to read. There are numerous books and manuals available on the subjects of wildlife and ecology. Visit our book shop and browse through our selection of wildlife books.
There are also many websites that have useful information about wildlife, conservation and legislation. Click here to find some useful website links.
Our Senior Ecologist, Sue Searle, is currently writing a book about how to become an ecologist. This book will be released later this year and will provide a useful insight and tool for those wishing to pursue a career in ecology.
