Seasonal Walks
Here are some walks for each season, all are in Devon and are easy with good access. There is always lots of wildlife to be seen at these sites but they are at their best at the times suggested.
Spring - Dunsford Walk along the River Teign through ancient woodland, look for the Daffodils in March and Bluebells in May. Park at the car park near the tea rooms. Dippers and otters use the river and can be seen. Devon Wildlife Trust reserve.
Summer - Berry Head/Prawle Point
Berry Head is in Torbay with a car park at SX943564. There is a good selection of wild flowers growing on top of the limestone cliffs which also support an important sea-bird colony. Peregrines breed in the area and can be seen hunting over the cliffs. During the autumn migrant birds are forced close inshore by gales.
Prawle Point is near Kingsbridge at (where there is parking) with the coast path leading to Start Point. Attractive scenery over the cliffs with lots of small songbirds and cirl buntings in the scrub. Shearwaters can be seen out to sea as well as grey seals and basking sharks.
Autumn - Yarner Wood This is an ancient woodland near Bovey Tracy with good numbers of breeding birds during the summer including pied flycathcer. During the autumn, however, there is excellent opportunities to see woodpeckers, nuthatches and other species using the birdfeeders, allowing close views from the hides provided. Also during the autumn are impressive numbers of fungi. Park at the car park at SX786788 off the B3344.
Winter - Exe Estuary/Bowling Green Marsh. The Exe Estuary and Bowling Green Marsh are internationally famous for the spectacular numbers of wintering birds including avocets, spoonbills, lapwings (pictured), curlew and oystercatchers. Park in Topsham for Bowling Green Marsh, for the rest of the Exe Estuary there are places to park between Powderham (SY973844) and Dawlish Warren (SY980787). During the rest of the year there is always plenty to see including wild flowers and abundant insects.
